The Program

Eli J. Segal Citizen Service Fellowship
Based at Eli’s alma mater, Brandeis University, the fellowship will provide stipends to Brandeis undergraduate students (in their sophomore or junior year) and graduate students at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management, to support up to fifteen summer internships. Students will serve as interns in carefully selected placements in organizations in the private, nonprofit and public sectors that are working for the public good. Segal Fellows will participate in a curriculum designed to strengthen the impact of the internships, and present the results of their experience to other Fellows and a broader University audience each fall. In addition, they will commit to remaining part of the Segal Fellows Network throughout their careers.

The Segal Fellows Network
The Segal Fellows Network will create a community of citizen leaders, including men and women who have served as Segal Fellows at Brandeis and those who have been the recipients of awards and fellowships created in Eli’s honor at the Corporation for National Service, AmeriCorps Alums and CityYear. Annual meetings and other activities will develop Fellow's skills and foster relationships that will expand their effectiveness at working for the common good. Our goal is to make the experience of being a Segal Fellow a recognized and valued credential – signifying important leadership qualities, significant developmental experiences, and the support of a network of talented people committed to each Fellow’s success. The Fellows will be nurtured at first with the help of the Program’s Founders – each of whom will be considered an Honorary Fellow. After a few years, alumni will themselves provide a guiding hand to incoming Fellows – providing them an opportunity to give back by mentoring others in much the same way that Eli did for so many.

Inaugural Fellows Selected at Brandeis University!

The initial 6 Segal Fellowships have been awarded to 4 undergrads at Brandeis and 2 graduate students at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management.  These internships will be conducted in the summer of 2008 at the national offices of leading public and non-profit organizations in Wash DC, New York City and Boston.  More details to come!

Eli J. Segal Memorial Lecture
Beginning this year, and timed to align with national election cycles, a prominent leader will be invited to present the Eli J. Segal Memorial Lecture at Brandeis University. The lecture will focus on civic leadership and national service, and will serve as a national platform for sharing new and innovative ideas, increasing awareness of and expanding opportunities in these areas, and stimulating, in Eli’s words, the translation of “poetry into prose.” Speakers will include policy makers, opinion leaders, students, social entrepreneurs, national and community service leaders and members of the Segal Network.
